Herbarium EMMA

Herbarium of the School of Forestry of Madrid (Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Montes de Madrid)

The Technical University of Madrid (Universidad Politécnica de Marid) is the home of one of the Spain's largest herbarium specialised in woody flora, the Herbarium of the School of Forestry of Madrid. Established in 1855, the Herbarium is recognized internationally by the Index Herbariorum acronym 'EMMA'.  Is also member of the Iberian & Macaronesian Herbarium Association since its foundation.

The herbarium's holdings are mostly from the Iberian peninsula, North Africa and Macaronesia. The collection consists of approximately 40,000 specimens and 1,000 fossil plants. There are several type specimens contained in the collection, as well as many sets of  exsiccatae.

The primary purpose of the Herbarium is the digital databasing of its collections. It begun in 2004 with the aim of make a geographical database available. The access to our data is now free and open through Internet on the Spanish node of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) site.

Paleobotanical Collection

Dendrolito de GaleraThe EMMA Paleobotanical Collection includes approximately one thousand specimens.The collection  range from the Mesozoic to the Holocene, and its particular strengths are the megafossil woods of the Pleistocene and Holocene of the Iberian peninsula.

Some specimens have been donated to the Palaeobotanic Museum of Cordoba and the National Archaeological Museum of Spain
