Botany, Dendrology and Geobotany

This subject is studied on the third year of the studies of Forestry Engineering.  Carlos Morla Juaristi, Fernando Gómez Manzaneque, Felipe Martínez, Ignacio García-Amorena and José María Postigo give all of the theoretical and practical courses during the year.

The first part of the courses is devoted to an introduction on taxonomy and botanical nomenclature. The next themes are meant to recognize the floristic diversity, morphology and ecology of the main ligneous taxa of the Iberian peninsula.

Special attention is given to the value of the different species on reforestation, conservation, production or on their bioindicator value. Geobotanical themes include aspects related to Palaeophytogeography (Palaeobotany and Palaeogeography), Ecology and dynamics of vegetal systems. The last themes are devoted to the Flora and Vegetation of the Earth and the Iberian Peninsula.

Organization: Schedule, Exams and Program

Schedule:

• Theoretical courses: Monday and Tuesday, from 11:45 to 14:00
• Practical courses: Monday and Tuesday, from 15:00 to 17:00 

Exams: The program of this subject is divided in three parts that corresponds each one with an independent exam:

• 1st part- Botany and Dendrology: Generalities, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms, Angiosperms (Dycotiledons)
• 2nd part- Botany and Dendrology (cont.): Angiosperms, Dycotiledons (cont) and Monocotyledons
• 3er part- Geobotany. Biogeography. Chorology, Earth's Floras, Phytosociology, Earth's vegetation,  Flora and Vegetation of Spain.

Fieldwork

Every year, six fieldwork trips are planed. In autumn, a long trip of six days long is made focused on the deciduous forests of Northern Iberia (Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, eastern Cantabrian Range, Pyrenees and northeast of Iberia). On spring, another six days trip is organised. The areas that are then visited are Eastern Iberia, the arid Southwest, Southwest and Lusitanian territories. We also organize four one-day trips to different forest ecosystems of central Spain (Sierra de Gredos, Sierra de Guadarrama, Alto Tajo, Depresión del Tajo).

Plant Palaeogeography

It is a subject for postgraduate students, in the Doctorate program of "Silvopascicultura". Its coordination depends alternatively of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Carlos Morla and Fernando Gómez) and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Helios Sainz and Mercedes García Antón). It is designed to cover over four weeks, 40 hours of classroom and fieldwork.

The program retains every year the basics of the subject, but it changes slightly every year, depending on the lecturers that come give the conferences. A field trip (three or four days long) is also organized. The last day is devoted to a grouping discussion on the concepts and doubts that could appear during the classes.
