Santiago Saura Martínez de Toda

Santiago Saura conducts research in landscape ecology, biodiversity conservation, forest management, and sustainable development through projects funded by various European, national, and regional programs, such as the ongoing SafeNet project of Horizon Europe, and through collaborations with researchers in different countries.
He has authored or co-authored more than one hundred articles in international journals and other publications on these topics, which have received more than 14,000 citations and an h-index of 55 according to Google Scholar, and more than 8,000 citations and an h-index of h=43 according to the Web of Science.
He has developed methods, metrics and tools for the analysis of landscape connectivity and for supporting decision-making in its management, such as the Conefor software, which is widely used internationally, or the Protected Connected (ProtConn) index, which has been included in the monitoring framework of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted by the Convention on Biological Diversity.
He teaches on international policies on forests, nature conservation and the environment, on climate change mitigation and adaptation, on landscape restoration, and on the analysis and management of ecological connectivity in different bachelor's and master's degree programs at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. He also frequently lectures as a visiting professor in other universities in Spain and abroad.
